Experience Earned
I’ve spent most of my adult life around boats, yachts, owners, crews, shipyards, and the sea.
I earned my first USCG master’s license in 1987. Since then, my career has included commercial vessels, yacht command, private and charter operations, vessel deliveries, brokerage, refits, maintenance, crew leadership, and extensive cruising throughout the Pacific Northwest.
The technical skills matter.
But over time, the greater lessons are about judgment, leadership, responsibility, and what happens when plans meet reality.
Experience has taught me which problems matter, which do not, and when to act.
What I've Learned
The sea has little interest in plans, titles, or assumptions.
Weather changes. Equipment fails. People get tired. Information is incomplete.
Over time, you learn to prepare thoroughly, stay calm, adapt quickly, and make decisions without pretending certainty exists.
That mindset has shaped far more than the way I run a yacht.
